Most people must have heard about Android and iOS. Android by Google and iOS by Apple are the world's largest mobile operating systems. But, apart from these two, there are few more which people know and use - BB10 from RIM, Windows 8 from Microsoft, Symbian from Nokia and Bada from Samsung. But in this post, I am going to write about two upcoming open source mobile operating system which I am excited about - Tizen and B2G.
Tizen is an open source, standards-based software platform for multiple device categories. Tizen is a collaborative effort of the Linux Foundation along with Intel and Samsung. Intel and Nokia started the Meego OS but Intel left it midway. On the other hand, Samsung also realized that Bada is not the future and hence stopped its development. Hence, these two giants came together and Tizen was born. Tizen is an Linux based mobile OS capabale of running HTML5 applications. It can be used in Smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smartTV and in-vehicle infotainment systems. The SDK is its alpha stage and hopefully we can see a device running Tizen by mid 2013.

B2G aka Boot to Gecko, also known as Firefox OS is a new OS capable of running native HTML5 applications directly with hardware. It has Gonk software layer which consists of the Linux Kernel and interacts with the hardware. The Gecko layer which implements HTML, CSS and Javascript standards and also has networking, graphics and various other stacks. The top layer is Gaia which is the user interface of Firefox OS. The OS has been successfully demoed and various ports on existing commercial devices are available. A full-fledged phone running B2G is expected in 2013.
