The Olympic Conundrum

Hurray ! India finally managed to win the highest number of medals in the Olympic History. But is it enough ?

I am a keen follower of sports and the Olympic extravaganza was one of the best sporting events throughout the world. I almost viewed every game in which India had sent a contestant. After Sushil Kumar winning the silver medal, the country was happy. It was a moment of joy for all Indians, as we finally got hold of 6 medals, double than last time. But, along with happiness, there are serious questions which are needed to be answered.

Among 1.2 billion Indians, we were able to send just 81 athletics and we won only 6 medals ? There is some  serious issue with this. Even countries with one-tenth of our population has won more medals than us. So where does the fault lie ? Are our sportpersons not hardworking ? Are they not talented ? Yes, they are talented and hardworking but the fault lies with us. We are a cricket crazy nation and often neglect our other sporting heros. There is lack of sponsorship for them. Lack of support and recognition for them. Once, we introspect and correct our shortcomings, then only India can comeback with more medals. More training facilities, world class coaches, grass root level talent hunting and grooming, monetary awards for performance, more inflow of sponsorship and finally more awareness may lead to a change.

The London2012 Olympic games may prove a stepping stone for the nation and may lead to a turning point in the sport scenario in India. Finally, congratulations to all the 6 athletics who have made India proud due to their achievement ! And I hope we can win more medals in Rio2016.
